We were contacted by Mitch Wolfe Jr who found a WWII dog tag while medal detecting and was looking for some help in finding the family to return the dog tag. The dog tag belongs to Roy P Smith. See below for findings and family contact info. 

Roy P Smith was born 25 OCT 1903 in Blodgett Mills, Cortland, NY and died 22 OCT 1982 in Cortland, NY

His married  Gladys M Calkins Smith, in 1923 in NY. They resided at 92 Homer Ave., Cortland, NY.

In Sept 1942 Roy, a Lt for Cortland FD, enlisted in Army - Excerpt from Cortland Standard "Tokens of remembrance were presented on Saturday to Roy P Smith who enlisted in the ground crew of the Army Air Force and reported at Syracuse from where he will be sent to Fort Niagara. A fountain pen from Hitchcok Hose Company, 6, of the Cortland Fire Dept of which he has been a member over 19 yearss, was presented by Capt Elmer J Caughey. From the paid men of the fire dept with whom be had been affiliated close to 14 years and recently made a lieutenant in their ranks he received a gold wrist identification tag."

Gladys Calkins Smith and Roy Percy Smith did not have any children and were divorced in about 1948.

Gladys Calkins Smith went on to marry H. Kenneth Costello in 1949 and they continued to live at 92 Homer Ave, Cortland, NY. (Gladys Calkins Smith Costello was born 28 Mar 1905 and died 9 Jan 1995- she is buried at Cortland Rural Cemetery in Cortland, NY)

Roy P. Smith got married again in 1949, to Katheryn Lucy Crane Smith. (Katheryn Lucy Crane Smith was born 17 JUL 1910 in Cortland, NY and died 18 OCT 1999 in Cortland, NY - buried at St. Marys Cemetery, Cortland, NY )

Roy and Katheryn had one child, Christine Jeanne Smith Aldrich. Christine was born 16 AUG 1951 in Cortland, NY,

Christine J. Smith married Dennis E Aldrich on February 14th in St Marys Church, Courtland, NY. Her parents (Roy and Katheryn, 164 Madison St, Cortland, NY) and his parents were Mr and Mrs Joseph Aldrich of Homer, NY.

At the time of their marriage, Christine was a sophmore at Tompkins Cortland Community College. Her husband, Dennis E Aldrich, was a 1965 graduate of Dryden High School, completed a 4 year tour of duty in the US Navy and was then employed with Smith Corona Marchant Corporation.

Roy P. Smith died in 1982, and is buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Cortland, NY 

Christine died at the age of 36 - on 27 OCT 1987. One source indicates that she had had an brain aneurysm, and was in coma for several years before passing. She is buried at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Cortland, NY.

At the time of her death, she was survived by her mother; Katheryn Smith, husband Dennis Aldrich and 3 children.

Katheryn Smith (Roys wife) died 18 Oct 1999 and is buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, NY.
