Appropriate to the Cause: David Bustill Bowser and the regimental flags of the U.S.C.T.

African-American artist and abolitionist, D.B. Bowser, painted the regimental flags of the United States Colored Troops raised from 1863 to 1865 at Camp William Penn in Chelten Hills, just north of Philadelphia. Born in Philadelphia to Free Colored parents, Bowser was talented and well-educated, and made a living as a sign painter. But, as the specter of Slavery was never far from the lives of his family and all in his community, he directed his skills as a “strong platform speaker” and “Artist No. 1” to advancing the causes of Abolition and Equality. His life of service to the United States, and in advocacy for the application of the principles on which the nation had been founded to all of its citizens, was exemplary. David Harrower, local historian and co-author of “A Spectacle of Men and Angels: a Documentary Narrative of Camp William Penn and the Raising of Colored Regiments in Pennsylvania,” is honored to be able to bring recognition to D.B. Bowser’s story.
