Human remains recovered from North Korea have been identified as those of a Korean War veteran from Philadelphia, and burial is scheduled in April 11th in Bucks County, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Tuesday.
Army Cpl. Robert Higgins was 20 when his unit was overrun in South Korea by Chinese forces in what became known as the Hoengsong Massacre, according to the department’s POW/MIA Accounting Agency.
His remains are scheduled to be buried April 11 with full military honors in Newtown, Pennsylvania. Higgins was serving in mid-February 1951 with Battery C, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division and was deployed near Hoengsong, South Korea, when the enemy attacked their defensive line, according to Tuesday’s announcement.
U.S. forces suffered more than 200 dead and wounded, and more than 100 men were taken prisoner and relocated to North Korea. Higgins was reported as missing in action Feb. 13, 1951.
