Join American Legion Riders and others as we honor the service of Sgt Charles Baldari (1911-1999) at his gravesite at St Mary’s Cemetery. He was a highly decorated combat veteran of WWII. During an assault in Germany, he successfully attacked, alone, three enemy pillboxes which were dealing the advance of his company. For his gallantry, he was awarded America’s second highest military honor, the Distinguished Service Cross.
“Alone against pillboxes – Three of them were holding up First Sgt Charles A Baldari’s Co. C, 818th Inf Regt, 80th Divn, in the assault on heavily-fortified Biesddorf, Germany. Sgt Baldari went out alone to take care of them. Sending grenades and bullets ahead of him, he knocked them off 1-2-3, came back with 14 prisoners. Next day he went out again – crawled through a hail of fire 150 yards beyond friendly lines to bring back a wounded comrade. And again – on that second day; The Nazis hurled in heavy counterattack, threatened to surround the company command post. Sgt Baldari, nicknamed “One Man Expeditionary Force”, was credited with throwing it back. For “unfaltering courage, heroism and devotion to duty”. Sgt Baldare holds Americas second highest military honor – the Distinguished Service Cross.
