Octavius Catto Luncheon and cocktail reception at the Philadelphia Union League, Center City at Broad and Sansom Streets (240 South Broad Street, Phila. PA 19102) on February 22, 2020.
Major Octavius Catto (1839 -1871) was a great Civil War era African-American leader and civil rights martyr from Philadelphia. He was also a professor at the Institute for colored youth, the forerunner of Cheyney University. He became a Brigade Inspector General with the National Guard and promoted to Major, making him the highest ranking African American in the military services at that time. Catto was shot and killed near his home in Philadelphia while trying to quell the riots and the killing of Black voters.
The Honor Ceremony will start at 11:00 AM at the new Octavius Catto Monument at the SW corner of City Hall where there will be a wreath laying, honor volleys and taps. Civil War era military units, period civilians, veterans and heritage groups will be participating. Colors, music and a special unveiling of a restored battle flag of the 127th United States Colored Troop Regiment, which was raised with help of the Philadelphia Union League. The regiment trained at Camp William Penn in Cheltenham Township.
Following the program at City Hall, the procession will walk back to the Union League for lunch and cocktails starting at 12:30 PM where there will be the Pennsylvania National Guard – Catto Medal Award Luncheon & Ceremony.
Dress Code – Business Attire Men – Jacket and Tie, No sneakers please.
